25 Things to Purge in 2025

1. Let’s start with something that is not in our closet, but rather in our hearts and heads- anxiety, fear, and regret.

There is no room for it. Anxiety, fear and regret can hold us back in all aspects of our life. And when it comes to having the closet and wardrobe we want, it can hold us back. It can stop us from finding and developing our style.

So, if you want to have great style this year, let go of anxiety and fear. Style takes some effort and some trial and error. Don’t be afraid to try new things. If something doesn’t work, move on. Don’t worry about what other people will think when you wear something outside of your comfort zone.

Let go of regret over past purchases. Don’t hold on to things in your closet that don’t serve you well or achieve your goals just because you have spent money on them. The money has been spent.

If you want to recoup some of your money, try selling unworn or gently worn items on Poshmark or get a Thred Up bag and let them resell for you. If it’s not worth the hassle, donate your items.

2. Get rid of clothes that don’t fit.

Get rid of anything that it too big or too small. Wearing ill-fitting clothing is a sure way to look frumpy, so be ruthless here. Clothing that is too big does not make you look smaller- it makes you look bigger. Stop hiding under your clothes and get clothing that fits.

Likewise, if it’s too small, it’s too small. Dress the body you have now, not the one you hope to have. We do change sizes as we age, so there is no shame in wearing a different size that you used to. If you are not happy with your body, do something about it to be healthier and happier. Dress the body you have now and you will be encouraged on your health and fitness journey.

Don’t assume something fits. If it has been a while since you have worn it, try it on.

3. Anthing that is uncomfortable or painful to wear.

Don’t settle for anything that is uncomfortable to wear, including shoes that are painful. Odds are, you are not wearing these items and they are taking up valuable space in your closet. Get rid of the itchy, scratchy items, bras that poke, underwear that doesn’t stay in place, and anything that doesn’t feel good to wear.

4. Anything that doesn’t fit your personal style.

Can you describe your style in three words? If you have honed in on your personal style and an item does not align with your style or style words, let it go. If you need help defining your style, check out this post.

5. Anything that doesn’t fit your lifestyle.

Be honest about your needs. Don’t hang on to clothes that fit a fantasy lifestyle. If you never attend cocktail parties, you don’t need ten cocktail or party dresses. Think about how you spend your days—are you working from home, running after grandkids, meeting friends for brunch, or traveling?

Your clothes should reflect the reality of your daily activities, not an idealized version of your life. Be honest with yourself about what you truly need and wear. Invest in versatile pieces that can transition easily between occasions, and don’t be afraid to let go of items that no longer fit your current stage of life. The goal is to create a wardrobe that feels both functional and authentic, so you’re never left wondering, “What am I going to wear?”

6. Gifted clothing and accessories that don’t work for you.

Remember #1- we are getting rid of guilt. Don’t feel guilty about passing on something that was gifted to you that doesn’t fit or work for you.

7. Multiples of the same piece.

Sure it seemed like a great idea to buy one of every color in that fabulous t-shirt you found, or to have five black sweaters on hand, but the chances are you don’t wear them all. Having too many duplicates can limit your wardrobe’s variety and make getting dressed feel repetitive. Instead of stocking up on several identical pieces, focus on owning one or two quality versions that you’ll truly enjoy wearing. By streamlining, you’ll create a more intentional closet filled with items you genuinely value, while also saving space and money.

8. Anything faded, stained or worn beyond repair.

You will never look polished in worn out clothing and you won’t feel fabulous in them. Get rid of them. Consider a textile recyling program over throwing them in the trash.

9. Items that are in need of repair that you won’t make time to repair.

If you love something that needs repairing, repair it or get it repaired. Set a deadline. If you haven’t repaired it, donate or recycle it.

10. Outdated styles.

Fashion evolves, and while some trends come back around, many don’t stand the test of time. Clinging to pieces that no longer feel current—or that you no longer feel confident wearing—can prevent you from embracing styles that better reflect who you are today. Letting go of outdated clothing creates room for fresh, modern pieces that align with your personal style and the times.

If something does come back in style, odds are it will be slightly different than the original piece, or your old version won’t fit anymore. Go ahead and let go of the out of style pieces.

11. Anything you are keeping just for sentimental reasons.

Clothing tied to sentimental memories can be the hardest to let go of, but it’s important to strike a balance between honoring the past and making space for the present. Start by asking yourself if the item holds true sentimental value or if it’s just taking up space out of guilt or habit. If it’s deeply meaningful but not wearable, consider repurposing it—turn an old shirt into a pillow cover, or frame a piece of fabric as a keepsake. Alternatively, take photos of the item to preserve the memory without holding onto the physical piece. Remember, the memories aren’t in the clothing; they’re in you. By letting go, you’re not erasing the past—you’re making room for new experiences and stories.

12. Colors that don’t flatter you.

Wearing colors that don’t flatter you can make even the most well-designed outfit feel off. The wrong shades can wash you out, clash with your complexion, or simply make you feel less vibrant. Keeping clothing in unflattering colors only takes up valuable space in your wardrobe without serving your best interests. By letting go of those pieces, you create room for colors that enhance your natural features and make you feel confident and radiant. Focus on tones that complement your skin, hair, and eyes, and build a palette that reflects your personality and boosts your self-esteem every time you get dressed.

13. Clothes that don’t work for your body type.

If you have clothes that fit but don’t feel quite right, or look quite right and don’t seem to flatter you, they probably don’t work for your body shape. Learn how to dress your body type, and ditch the pieces that don’t work for you.

14. Anything that makes you feel frumpy.

Whether an item is ill-fitting, or the wrong color, or whatever the reason, if you don’t feel your best in it, let it go. Clothing should make you feel confident, comfortable, and like the best version of yourself. When you wear something that makes you feel less than fabulous, it can affect how you carry yourself and how you interact with the world. Letting go of anything that makes you feel frumpy clears the way for pieces that flatter your figure, reflect your style, and bring a sense of joy when you put them on. Life is too short to wear clothes that don’t make you feel amazing!

15. Pieces that don’t work with other pieces.

Let go of anything that you struggle to style with other pieces in your closet. If you are always looking at a piece and thinking, if I had this skirt or those pants, to make it work, odds are you are never going to wear it. If you aren’t willing to buy the pieces that make it work, let it go. The next time you shop, ask yourself if you can wear a piece three ways with other pieces you own before purchasing.

16. Items that still have tags on after a few weeks.

If you were not excited enough about a purchase to wear it shortly after purchasing, odds are it was an impulse buy you didn’t really want or need. Let it go.

17. Excessive or mismatched hangers.

Your closet will be more streamlined if your hangers are all the same. Ditch the wire hangers and the plastic ones from the store. I prefer velvet hangers because clothes don’t fall off and they save space. Likewise, don’t keep lots of extra hangers. You won’t be inclined to bring in more than you need if you don’t have hangers for it.

18. Anything that is not part of your wardrobe.

Only store clothing, shoes and accessories in your closet. Find other storage space for random things that have made their way into your closet. Getting dressed will be easier if you are not sifting through other clutter.

19. Get rid of the “freebie event shirts” or cleaning clothes.

You may want a piece or two of “old” clothing for dirty projects, but you don’t need a closet full.

20. Ill-fitting or grungy lounge wear or sleep wear.

What you lounge in or sleep in should make you feel jus as fabulous as the things you wear outside of the house. If these pieces are also worn out, or no longer feel good, let them go.

21. All of the trends.

If you have a closet full of trends and no basic or classic pieces, get rid of some of the trends. You don’t have to try and wear all of the trends every season. Keep and wear only the ones you truly love.

22. Purses and accessories you have not used in a year or two.

These pieces are just taking up space. If you don’t love them, let them go. If you aren’t reaching for them, you probably don’t love them.

23. Out of season clothing.

If you have the luxury of storing things that are not the current season, do so. It will make your closet feel less cluttered and make getting dressed for the current season easier.

24. Worn out or ill-fitting bras, underwear and shapewear.

These are the basis of your outfit and if they don’t fit correctly, neither will your clothes. Finding the right undergarments can sometimes be trial and error, so let go of the pieces that didn’t work out. If it’s worn out, it can’t do its job, so it’s time to get new bras and undies.

25. Expired cosmetics and beauty products.

Cosmetics have an expiration date. They become contaminated and it’s dangerous to keep using them beyond their expiration. You have permission to get rid of the 12 lipsticks you don’t like and don’t wear.
