10 2024/2025 Winter Fashion Trends You Can Wear Over 40

The winter season is upon us now. What does that mean for fashion trends? Changes in trends aren’t as big for winter and summer as they are for fall and spring. In fact, you can keep what you have been wearing this fall and be completely on trend for winter. But if you want to know what has grown in popularity or has emerged on top for winter, keep reading.

10 Wearable Winter Fashion Trends for Women Over 40

Asymmetrical and Off Shoulder Necklines

These have popped up everywhere. Pair them with wide leg and flare leg pants for balance, especially off shoulder tops and sweaters. Off shoulder tops will make you look wider up top, so inverted triangles may want to avoid these, but our pear-shaped friends should snatch one up immediately.

Don’t ruin this look with a bralette. Save the bralette for the more casual slouchy oversized  one off-shoulder looks. A strapless bra is a must. This one and this one are good options.

Asymetrical tops will be easier for everyone to wear and may not require a special bra.

Shop the trend:

Faux Fur

Faux fur jackets are trending, especially for the holidays, but will stick around for the rest of winter. Faux fur vests are back again as well, and much more wearable for those in warmer climates than full jackets. Pair up a faux fur jacket with just about anything- jeans and a tee, or trousers, dresses and skirts.

Shop faux fur jackets and vests:

Chocolate brown

The chicest shade of cocoa is appearing in everything you can think  of- boots, suede bags, gloves, faux leather, and coats. There are warm browns and cool browns, so everyone can get in on this.

Shop browns:

Burgundy

Burgundy is everywhere this winter. It’s a continuation of a fall color trend, but can we even call it a trend? I wear burgundy every fall and winter. Switch out your black coat and gloves for ones in burgundy for a chic update.

Leopard print

Another fall trend that is continuing to shine for winter. Go for a two-fer trend with a faux fur leopard print jacket.

I didn’t go too crazy over this one this time around in fall. I added one leopard top and one pair of shoes and pulled out some of my older shoes and leopard boots that were still relevant, but there is still winter to go. I think the most stylish way to wear leopard is to be selective and to pick refined polished pieces and leopard patterns. Don’t opt for the super cheap stuff just to have leopard print everything.

If the brown and tan mix of leopard isn’t flattering to you, there are some cooler tone prints popping up for winter.

Shop leopard:

Satin

Satin midi and maxi slip skirts were popular for fall and satin bottoms continue to trend for winter, with the addtion of satin pants. I’m also a fan of satin or silk button up tops. Just don’t pair a satin button up top with satin pants, or you run the risk of looking like you are in your pjs. Pair satin with another texture. Pair a sweater with satin pants, pair a satin top with leather pants or skirts.

Shop satin bottoms:

Tall boots/riding boots

Tall boots are always in style, but sometimes the shape of the toe or the heel changes with the trends. Riding boots have taken a back seat for a while, but they are back. But don’t go pull out your 2013-2017 era riding boots. And please don’t grab the skinny jeans and old 2013 puffer vest and blanket scarf. That is not the look anymore. The more on trend, modern riding boots have a few tweaks to them. They are more polished and refined, with more heel than your old flat riding boots.

Barrell leg jeans

Barrel legs jeans are coming on strong for winter. They are defined by their fitted waist, and curved leg that widens about mid-thigh and tapers at the ankle, giving the leg a curved, or horseshoe effect. The barrel shape can be slight or very exaggerated. Since fall, they have been growing in popularity and barrel leg pants and jeans are available everywhere now. You may love them or hate them as they can be quite controversial, or you may be on the fence about them. I embraced them in early fall and have been fun wearing them. They lend themselves best to casual looks. I stick to the less exaggerated leg styles.

Faux leather bottoms

Faux leather pants and skirts are still going strong. The silk/satin midi slip skirt was fall’s skirt and it’ s winter sister is the faux leather pencil skirt.

Capes

I’m not super excited about this one. I have wraps and ponchos but don’t reach for them often. While wraps and ponchos are still acceptable, this trend is about true capes with armholes.
