Why is February 14 Valentine’s Day?

Have you ever wondered why this romantic holiday is celebrated specifically on the 14th of February? The origins of Valentine’s Day are shrouded in mystery and involve ancient legends, historical figures, and religious traditions.

The Origins and Significance of Valentine’s Day – Celebrating Love on February 14th

1. Ancient Roman Festival of Lupercalia:

Valentine’s Day finds its roots in an ancient Roman festival known as Lupercalia. This fertility celebration was held annually from February 13-15 where men would whip women with animal hides believing it would increase their fertility. While this may not align directly with modern-day celebrations, it was the first association between mid-February and romance.

2. St. Valentine – The Patron Saint of Love:

The name “Valentine” is derived from St. Valentine, a Christian martyr who lived during the third century in Rome. Emperor Claudius II had banned marriages for young soldiers because he believed that unmarried soldiers made better warriors. However, St.Valentine secretly performed weddings for these soldiers which eventually led to his execution on February 14th around AD 269.

3. The Chaucer Connection:

Geoffrey Chaucer, an English poet from the Middle Ages (late 14th century), played a significant role in associating Valentine’s Day with romantic love through his literary works.

Geoffrey Chaucer, the renowned English poet of the Middle Ages, is often associated with Valentine’s Day due to his work “Parliament of Fowls” (also known as “The Parliament of Birds”). Written in the 14th century, around 1382-1383, this poem is considered one of Chaucer’s earlier works and is part of his larger body of work, “The Canterbury Tales.”

In “Parliament of Fowls,” Chaucer explores the theme of love and courtship through a dream vision. The poem is set in the context of a parliament or assembly of birds, where they gather to choose their mates. The narrative unfolds on St. Valentine’s Day, and Chaucer describes the rituals and discussions among the birds as they select their partners.

While Chaucer’s poem doesn’t specifically establish a direct link to the modern celebration of Valentine’s Day, it is considered one of the earliest references to the association between love and this particular day. Over time, Valentine’s Day became increasingly associated with romantic love, and Chaucer’s work contributed to the cultural and literary foundations that shaped the celebration of love on February 14th.

No matter how Valentine’s Day got its start, it’s a great day to show your love and appreciation. Will you gift one of these to your special Valentine? Will  you be having 14 days of Valentiines, or just keep it to one day?
