Welcome to 9 to 5 Style! The third Monday of every month Jennie of A Pocketful of Polka Dots and I will showcase a theme featuring our individual takes on a professional look. Our aim is to inspire and show professional style does not have to mean boring and without personality. We hope you enjoy our 9 to 5 Style!
This month’s theme is polka dots. Polka dots are a fun pattern for both casual and work, and can certainly be worn to the office. Polka dot office attire is certainly permissible and can still be professional.
I chose to style this polka dot popover. I actually wore this outfit to the office last week. I’ve worn polka dots many times on the blog, and I’ve worn this popover many, many times. I have this one in both black and navy.
The navy was purchased first by mistake, thinking it was black, but I loved this top so much, I purchased it again in black. JCrew Factory brings them back from time to time, so scoop one up when you can.

This top has a pretty bold dot on it, so I thought it best to stick with other solids for the office. The trick to keeping polka dot office attire professional is not to over do it with the polka dots. Smaller patterns are usually more office appropriate. When the pattern is larger, make sure the item of clothing is structured like a button up, popover, or even a pencil skirt.
I have been gravitating to my guest bedroom where my fall clothes are stored and pulling out pieces like this cardigan more and more often. Maybe I’m bored with the summer clothes, or maybe the fall hype is getting to me, but it’s no where near time to swap out the closets. It’s still so hot. I have had this cardigan on my mind for wearing with another top, and I can reasonably wear it to the office thanks to cold AC.
What are your thoughts on wearing polka dots to the office? or polka dots in general? Not serious enough? Too whimsical or totally appropriate?
