Characterized by its close-fitting round neck, the crew neck sweater makes a great piece for layering with shirts and accessories because the neckline won’t compete with the other pieces the way a turtleneck or mock neck sweater might.
The round neckline was first used in t-shirts for navy sailors and sweatshirts for rowing teams (the crew) for comfort and function, but like many items of function, it became a mark of fashion over the years. You can find a crew neck on pullover shirts, sweatshirts, sweaters, and even dresses.
Odds are you have a crew neck sweater in your closet. It’s a winter staple and a versatile piece for creating countless winter outfits, and in lighter-weight knits, it’s perfect for fall and spring too.

11 Ways to Wear a Crew Neck Sweater
Wear A Crew Neck Sweater Over a Button Up Shirt
Not every button-up will work with every sweater, so this will take some trial and error to achieve a smooth look. A fitted button-up will work better than an oversized one and a thicker sweater or a cable knit sweater with texture will more easily hide any lumps underneath.
For a smart and polished workwear outfit, wear a crew neck sweater over a button-up shirt. A crisp white button-up, French blue or blue striped button-up make particularly professional crew neck sweater outfits.
This is also likely a go-to look if you prefer menswear-inspired or androgynous looks.

Pair Your Sweater With A Pencil Skirt
An ensemble of a crew neck sweater and pencil skirt can create a casual dressy to dressy look for these days when you want to dress it up a bit. The formality of the outfit will depend on the pieces you choose. A smooth cashmere sweater and pencil skirt with pumps will make a great look for the office or evening event.
A textured crew neck sweater and corduroy skirt makes a great elevated casual look for brunch, shopping or gatherings with friends.

Layer a crew neck sweater under a blazer for another polished office outfit.
Consider adding some color to your work wear with your sweater and finish off the outfit with some fun patterned shoes. You can pull this off with chunkier sweaters and oversized blazers, but I find that wearing a sweater under a blazer works best with a thinner, smoother sweater. Try the JCrew Factory teddy sweater or the Worthington sweaters from JCPenney.
While most blazes will work, a wool blend blazer or heavier weight like a houndstooth or tweed also pairs nicely with the texture of sweaters.

Lastly,
Layer a longer tee or blouse under your sweater, like Audrey, does.
You can find several examples of this over at Putting Me Together. It’s a great way to layer for warmth without being too bulky.
Go with a striped tee like the outfit below, or opt for a solid white or grey tee and let the hem of the tee hang out from the bottom of the sweater.

Are crew necks flattering?
This style of neckline will draw attention to your face and neck. It will also accentuate your bust and widen your shoulders. It’s better suited for small-frame petites, those will small busts and long necks.
That’s not to say that you can’t wear one if you fit those profiles. Wear it in your best color, or wear something that draws the line down, like the color on the bottom. Show off your legs with that sweater and pencil skirt outfit if your legs are your best feature.
How should a crew neck sweater fit?
That’s a matter of personal preference with all of the oversized fits available, but ideally, a crew neck sweater should fall just below the belt line and the shoulder seams should come to the spot where your shoulder bone ends. The sleeves should end at the base of your thumb or a little shorter if you want a cuff or another shirt to peek out.
How do you accessorize a crew neck sweater?
As already discussed, the crew neck doesn’t compete much so you can accessorize any way you want. If the round neck is making your face look rounder, choose a pair of longer, dangle earrings.
Don’t wear a round earring. Tuck the front of your sweater and add a belt to highlight a fabulous waistline. This neckline is perfect for wearing with scarves.
